Opposition coalition Cord, has for the last one month held countrywide protests agitating for the disbandment and reconstitution of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
Cord, led by Raila Odinga (ODM), Kalonzo Musyoka (Wiper) and Moses Wetangula (Ford Kenya) claim the electoral body is biased against the opposition and cannot therefore be entrusted to oversee the 2017 general elections.
The opposition maintains the electoral body should be reconstituted before August 2017.
Government on the other says it is ready to have a new IEBC in place but the disbandment of the current body can only be done within the confines of the law- to be specific through Parliament.
This writer sampled thoughts of key political leaders both in government and the opposition about the embattled IEBC.
Uhuru Kenyatta, President
I have no powers to dissolve the IEBC. Let no one come to engage me on issues of IEBC. As I have stated we have a process that is laid down.
Raila Odinga, ODM party President
IEBC is biased and cannot be allowed to overseer next year’s elections. The fact that I participated in appointing Isaac Hassan as the IEBC Chairman does not mean that I cannot criticise him when he is wrong.
Isaac Hassan, IEBC Chairman
I will not resign. Raila should go for civil discussions as storming the Commission is not the way to go about solving problems.
Moses Kuria, Gatundu South MP
If the courts don't stop Cord's anti-IEBC protests I will
William Ruto, Deputy President
Don’t be worried, we will solve these issues. We know these guys, we will talk and agree however, the Constitution must be respected because it is the supreme law of the country.
Kalonzo Musyoka, Wiper party leader
We will not relent, the struggle continues, we must reclaim our country, electoral reforms must be achieved, IEBC must go.
Johnston Muthama, Machakos Senator
Ruto is a stumbling block in the much-sought dialogue. The government has two weeks to initiate dialogue over this issue, failure to which we will hold protests every Monday and Thursday.
Aden Duale, Parliament's majority leader
I call the shots. I will oppose any proposals that come from negotiations between President Uhuru Kenyatta and Cord leader Raila Odinga to end the standoff over IEBC Commissioners.
I will only agree if Article 251 is followed to the latter and the spirit where anybody brings a petition on the removal of any Commission because sometimes you have to stand for the Constitution regardless of your standing in society.
Hassan Joho, Mombasa Governor
The argument that the IEBC is good when Cord win and is only bad when Cord lose is rendered null and void by its day to day conduct on various non-electoral issues management issues and failures.
Complex issues cannot be solved by simple solutions.
