A nine-year-old girl was on Sunday killed in Mandera County after a bus overturned in Rhamu Town.

Rhamu OCPD Anthony Murioki who confirmed the accident said several people also sustained injuries in the accident and they were rushed to the hospital for treatment.

Muriuki said the accident was caused by a front tyre burst adding that they suspect the bus was over speeding.

Mandera County Commissioner Fredrick Shisia said the Makkah bus was coming into Mandera County from Nairobi County when the bus driver lost control of the vehicle.

According to Daily Nation, the bus left Nairobi on Friday evening and arrived in Elwak on Saturday evening for an overnight stay.

The bus then proceeded to Mandera Town on Sunday morning under armed police escort.

OCPD Murioki said during the accident two people were seriously injured and many others suffered minor injuries.

“We suspect the bus was speeding and the tyre burst led to the loss of control. The injured passengers were taken to Rhamu Sub-County Hospital, while the two with serious injuries were transferred to Mandera County Referral Hospital,” said Mr Muriuki.
