Residents from Egetai village, Bobaracho sub-location Kisii Central sub-county were in shock after a ninety-year-old woman died after her grass thatched house caught fire on Wednesday night.
According to the villagers, the incident occurred at 10 pm when the old granny was in her house alone after taking super, she was given by her grandson.
Eyewitnesses interviewed by this reporter on Thursday said that they heard cries from the home and rushed there only to find the mud and grass thatched house on fire.
“We heard the woman screaming for help and rushed to her rescue, we tried to pull down a wall where her bed was located but could not find her but when we knocked the next wall we found her body burned beyond recognition,” said Gavez Masase.
They suspected the fire could have been caused by a kerosene tin lamb which might have ignited the beddings spreading it to the rest of the house.
Angelina Masese an elder said she was awoken by an alarm raised by the deceased’s grandson and set on the rescue mission.
Efforts to fight the fire and retrieve Mama Priscah Bosibori were futile as they found her body already charred.
They added that the Kisii county fire brigade could not assist since the house had collapsed and the victim succumbed to the intense heat.
Masese, however, blamed the local leaders for failure to respond to disasters saying plans for the deceased’s burial are underway.
