Turkana Governor Josephat Nanok has accused the Interior ministry led by Joseph Nkaissery of offering lame excuses for insecurity in Mandera after an attack on Governor Ali Roba.
The governors council chairman said the ministry has not taken the security of the governor and Mandera people seriously.
Nanok's remarks come after five AP officers were killed when their Land Cruiser ran over an IED between Arabia and Lafey in Mandera on Wednesday.
According to the Star, the five officers were part of Roba's convoy, which was headed from Arabia to Lafey for a campaign rally at about 1.30pm.
Roba's vehicle and others in the entourage had not reached the scene at the time of the explosion.
"Stop offering lame justifications for insecurity. Like the rest of the Country, residents of Mandera should enjoy their fundamental right to safety," Nanok said in a statement on Thursday as reported by Star.
"They should not live in fear that the next bullet will have their names on it. How many more must die before the Department of Interior and National Coordination contains this situation," he posed.
Nanok condoled with families of the deceased and wished the injured quick recovery.
The attacks has been linked to Al-Shabaab terrorists.
