The Interior cabinet secretary, Joseph Nkaissery has given out a stern warning to Cord members.
Nkaissery has threatened to arrest Cord leader, Raila Odinga and his followers if they follow through with the Madaraka Day rally at Uhuru Park.
He said that carrying out this rally would be a contravention of the Kenyan law and he would not allow it.
Speaking in Kajiado on Sunday, Nkaissery said Cord had been given too much freedom by the government and were now misusing that freedom to conduct unlawful activities.
“We will not give Cord any more room to challenge the government of the day. We will rein in Cord leaders Raila Odinga, Moses Wetangula, Kalonzo Musyoka and senators, James Orengo (Siaya) and Johnstone Muthama (Machakos) if they continue breaking the law,” he said.
Nkaissery said that the only person allowed to hold a rally on a day such as Madaraka Day at Uhuru Park is President Uhuru Kenyatta.
“Cord leader, Raila Odinga is not the president and should, therefore, not take over functions that are a preserve of the Head of State,” Nkaissery stated.
The Interior CS pointed out that there was little action carried out on Cord and their followers during the anti-IEBC riots but that would not be the case if the party carries out the rally.
Nkaissery’s threat comes amid the ongoing tussle between the Cord party, the police and Prayers Beyond Boundaries Ministries over who will use the park on Wednesday.
Both Cord and Prayers Beyond Boundaries Ministries maintain that they will hold their functions on Madaraka Day at Uhuru Park claiming that they were both given the right to go through with them by City Hall.
