Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery has warned politicians against funding criminal gangs.
The CS said politicians will not be allowed to use criminal gangs to intimidate their opponents during campaigns and the upcoming elections.
Speaking during a security meeting in Kiambu on Wednesday, Nkaissery blamed the re-emergence of criminal groups such as Mungiki and Gaza on politicians.
“The government will not sit back and watch as politicians organize criminal gangs in the name of supporters ahead of the 2017 general election,” he said.
He added that he had launched investigations into the funding of outlawed groups by politicians.
He further warned against the use of social media to spread hate, adding that the ministry will soon table a policy in Parliament, outlining penalties that will be imposed on hate mongers.
The CS also warned chiefs and their assistants against aligning themselves with politicians, saying they risk being sacked, as it interferes with service delivery.
Nkaissery raised concerns over the high rate of crime in Kiambu, saying Kikuyu, Kabete and Limuru were the most affected areas.
“Thirty two murders, 82 robberies and 147 burglaries have been reported in Kiambu alone. I will not allow us to lose the county to gangs, as it is the centre of peace for Nairobi people,” he said.
