Squatters living on controversial 1,750-acre land in Ngelani, Machakos County have reasons to smile against after the National Lands Commission (NLC) pledged to resettle them in three months. According to The Star, NLC chairman Muhammad Swazuri, said that the government will apportion parcels within the colonial land LR12610/1-5 after to provide the squatters with the permanent settlement.
He also revealed that the squatters will be provided with documents of ownership upon resettlement
"The commission has a mandate of resettling Kenyans on idle land without ownership. The government can decide to revert such land to residents or locals can make requests for them to be given the land," he said, as quoted by The Star.
Swazuri also said that the government is committed to ensuring that squatters have a place they can call home.
He was accompanied by Machakos county commissioner Matilda Sakwa, Mavoko MP Patrick Makau and Athi River deputy county commissioner Geoffrey Omoding during a meeting over the controversial land in Ngelani.
"As a commission, it is our mandate to verify that the land has no legitimate owner then we can make a decision on how to revert the same to the residents," Swazuri said.
He also warned local residents against physical confrontation over land, adding that a stern action will be taken against those who will violate the order.
