The National Museums of Kenya intends to set up 100 monuments in the counties to a tune of Sh1 billion to promote tourism and culture across the country.
NMK Director General Dr Mzalendo Kibunja said each county will have two monuments and another six in the national government grid.
Dr Kibunja said they are currently working on modalities of realizing the money from the government and other private sectors before the implementation work starts soon.
He said the move is aimed at improving the tourism circuit within the country at the same time preserving the cultural and local heritage.
Some of the historical sites that are marked for refurbishing include Lake Simbi Nyaima and Gor Mahia monuments in Homa Bay County.
He said they want to develop them as one group to promote tourism education livelihood around the monuments and help communities around such areas to begin various businesses.
“We are committed to ensuring that the country’s tourism is boosted and the construction of these historical sites will also enable preserve our heritage for the next generation,” the director said during the opening of the Abasuba Pictorial History Exhibition at the Kisumu Museum on Thursday.
