Lake Nakuru National Park Senior Warden Dickson Ritan has dismissed claims that 100 buffaloes have died at the park from an anthrax outbreak.

Speaking to the media at the Nakuru National Park on Wednesday, Ritan said the claims were false.

He said that no buffalo has died as a result of anthrax and that Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) officials are instigating the matter.

“We want to state clearly that no buffalo has died as a result of anthrax at the Nakuru Park,” he said.

Ritan dismissed the reports of buffalo deaths being reported in some sections of the media saying that a full report on the investigation will given once completed.

On Tuesday, Nakuru County Agriculture executive Stanley Chepkwony in a statement to the media said that two buffaloes and 100 cattle had died in some parts of the county as a result of anthrax.

Chepkwony added that the government had taken measures to control the disease.

He said that samples taken from the dead carcasses confirmed an outbreak in Rongai, Nakuru East and West.

Consequently, residents the affected constituencies have been cautioned against eating uninspected meat.

Dr Chepkwony on Wednesday said that the county government had imposed quarantine measures to curb the spread of anthrax.

“We have imposed quarantine to avert any spread of the contagious disease. We are warning people not to come into contact with these animals or their meat,” he stated.

He added that no meat will be allowed in or out of the quarantined areas.
