Kenya Revenue Authority has asserted that they don't plan to extend the deadline for filing tax returns beyond midnight of June 30.
KRA Director Evans Kakai insisted on Thursday that it will be very unfortunate for Kenyans who failed to beat the June deadline as is required by the law.
“We are even willing to extend the deadline up to midnight to give room to as many Kenyans as possible who are on their last-minute rush to beat the deadline,” Kakai stated.
He, however, said the period will only be extended if Kenyans experience delays caused by the taxman.
"In case our clients experience any form of delays caused by us, we shall evaluate its cause with a view to extending the deadline. Otherwise, penalties will be effected from midnight," Kakai added.
He urged Kenyans to file their tax returns failure to which they will be fined Sh10,000. The fine was raised from Sh1,000 to be a lesson to those who fail to file their returns.
Long queues have been witnessed at KRA's Times Tower offices in Nairobi as Kenyans lined to beat the deadline.
