Nakuru County Agriculture Executive Stanley Chepkwony has said that the government will not give maize seeds and fertilisers to farmers in Molo sub-county in the next planting season to to stop them from planting the same.
Speaking in Molo on Thursday while addressing farmers, Chepkwony said that they have decided not to give out any maize seeds to farmers in Molo to prevent them from planting maize in the coming season.
He said that Molo farmers have no option other than planting alternative crops or letting their farms lie idle for one season.
“As county government, we will not give any free maize seeds or fertilisers to farmers in Molo because we do not want them to plant maize this season following what we witnessed last season where all farms were invaded by maize lethal necrosis,” said Chepwkony.
He added that the best thing to do is to let the farms lie idle for one season so that they be able to clear away the virus from the soil.
He added, “There is no need of us giving you free seeds and fertilisers which will go to waste. We therefore decided that it will be better if we give out the seeds to farmers in areas which were not affected.”
Molo sub-county was among the worst hit regions with the maize lethal necrosis disease which attacked maize farms in Nakuru County and left farmers counting huge loses.
