The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has established a team to verify the authenticity of education credentials forwarded by potential aspirants in the next polls.

Speaking at a media briefing in Nairobi on Friday, IEBC chair Wafula Chebukati said the team will work with representatives from the ministry of education and other state agencies.

They said they are focused on stopping aspirants with fake certificates, especially those eyeing the presidential and gubernatorial seats.

For these, IEBC said, at least a valid bachelor's degree must be produced as required by the constitution.

“It’s part of our outreach activities for purposes of enforcing Chapter Six of the Constitution. The commission cannot do it alone. We will be looking forward to the technical team to complete its work and give us a report and we hope the exercise will go well,” Chebukati said.

Also present at the event was Education CS Fred Matiangi who said they will next week announce the modalities of the process once they receive confirmation that certificates of named politicians are not valid.
