According to the Nation, union officials representing the medics were “chased out” of a meeting convened by Labour Cabinet Secretary Phyllis Kandie.

Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) Secretary-General Ouma Oluga disclosed that the Thursday meeting was informally called for after a ministry official made a phone call Wednesday night.

“There was no invitation letter or email and no agenda,” he said.

He also lamented of delays in the meeting where Ms Kandie demanded to hold talks with only five union officials.

However, Dr Oluga says that the CS then chased them from the meeting on grounds that they had not followed instructions given beforehand.

The stalemate comes only a day after Health CS Cleopa Mailu pleaded with the medics to “cushion their demands with a little resilience and be humble enough to come back to the negotiating table”.

Mailu began talks with the medics on December 4, just a day before the strike started.
