The laws of Kenya do not allow police to arrest lawmakers in the precincts of the National Assembly since the leaders enjoy some immunity when they are in the August house.
However, this luxury may soon come to an end after some two city MPs where overheard in an upmarket restaurant in Nairobi where they said they were pushing for plans to ensure any MP who breaks the law within the August house surroundings is arrested.
“As law-abiding citizens, we cannot let lawbreakers hide in the National Assembly. We shall personally frog-march the culprits to police since the law has a provision for citizen arrest,” one of the MPs said.
In recent days, MPs have been speaking against authority in the precincts of parliament because they are aware of the luxury, most recent case was when Embakasi East MP Babu Owino took refuge at the premises for fear of being arrested after hitting hard on Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i.
