NASA leader Raila Odinga has said his team was ‘forced’ to withdraw from the presidential race because the irreducible minimums were not met.
Speaking on Wednesday morning on Radio Jambo, Odinga said the decision was hard to reach upon.
“I would like to thank all our supporters. I would like to say that the decision we made yesterday, Tuesday was not what we had anticipated, but we were forced to.
He added: “We went to court and presented evidence, which subsequently the Supreme Court annulled the elections. We sat down as NASA and agreed that there are certain issues that need to be looked into before going for another election, which is why we called for irreducible minimums,”
He further noted that the electoral body needs more time to have things in order for elections in the next 90 days.
“We have withdrawn to give the IEBC enough time to prepare for another poll, so that we do not rush and face the same issues we had in the August polls,”
Raila further said he cannot block anyone (the court and IEBC) from declaring Kenyatta as the president, but it will be unconstitutional.
“I cannot stop anyone from declaring Kenyatta the president, no one will stop them, but it will not be the will of the people,” he added.
Raila’s move has thrown the country in a political turmoil, with legal minds trying to dissect what next for the country.
