The fight for the powerful Nairobi City County Assembly Speaker position has started with MCAs saying no to former Nairobi Women Rep Rachel Shebesh.
According to law, an outside can be voted speaker by the MCAs, with only the deputy speaker being required by law to be a sitting MCA.
The job attracts over Sh280,00 monthly salary together with other benefits.
According to the Nairobian, Shebesh was being fronted by Jubilee for the position.Members however agreed to drop her on grounds that she had a strongly confrontational nature.
“Her combative nature was not going to work well with MCAs, considering they tend to be quarrelsome too and need a patient, understanding Speaker,” reported The Nairobian.
Those in the race include former speaker Ole Magelo, County Chief of Staff George Wainaina, Kamande Kamau who lost Roysambu MP seat, former Makadara MP Benson Mutura and Karen Nyamu, a loser in the Nairobi Woman Rep polls.
Wainaina;s chances are however fringe after accusations by governor-elect Mike Sonko that he is a close ally of former governor Evans Kidero.
Outgoing Karura MCA Kamau Thuo, City Hall Deputy Speaker Ken Ngondi as well as Vesca Kagongo (former member of Nairobi County Assembly Service Board) are also in the race.
