Nairobi senator and gubernatorial aspirant Mike Sonko has asked the county to elect him, promising to exempt the poor masses from paying trade licences for small businesses.

Speaking to crowds in Jericho on Monday, Sonko said that he owed a lot to the people and that he will work hand in hand with the masses to elevate them in life.

He stressed the need to consider the poor entrepreneurs in his planning and vowed never to betray them once he ascends to power.

"For those small retail businessmen like these selling potatoes (and) like those selling tomatoes, in my county government there will be no poor person paying for the license," he said amid cheers.

Sonko also said he will construct modern kiosks to help boost the businesses of those from the lower classes.

"We shall construct modern kiosks and distribute them to these businesspeople free of charge. Those colleagues of mine are selling to the poor (while) I will give to the poor freely," he said.
