Garissa County commissioner James Kianda has announced that there is no public primary and secondary school in the county that has been closed down due to the biting effects of drought currently witnessed.
Speaking in Garissa town, the administrator said the reports being circulated on the media were misleading, disclosing that his office will convene a round table meeting with the World Food Program (WFP) and the Kenya Red Cross to discuss possible solutions and recommendations to deal with the drought menace.
Kianda said seven sub-counties of the expansive Garissa County require at least 421 tons of relief food to sustain them for the next one month, noting that Fafi, Halugho and Ijara sub-counties are the most affected regions.
National Drought Management Authority chairperson Agnes Ndetei, who spoke in Garissa on Sunday said that the current drought situation was worsening, adding that the national and county government of Garissa will ensure that the sufferings brought by the current situation is reduced.
Ndetei added that regional coordination center would be set up in the town as from Tuesday at the governor’s office to provide data on the drought.
