Egerton University main campus in Njoro, Nakuru County has joined other Universities in the ongoing workers’ strike.
More than 3000 workers downed their tools demanding high pay form the government.
The university workers are in protest over low pay and unfulfilled promises by the government a move that has paralyzed learning in the institution.
According to the unions which include University Staff Academic Union (UASU), Kenya University Staff Union (KUSU) and Kenya Union of Domestic, Hotels, Educational Institutions, Hospitals and Allied Workers (KUDHEIHA), the government has failed to implement the 2017-2021 bargaining agreement.
"The Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) was presented to them but since then there has never been a salary increment. All we want is our issues to be factored into the budget and our money dispatched to us," Fred Mwangangi, UASU chairman Egerton University chapter said at when he officially launched the strike.
They blamed the government for non-commitment in the negotiations citing that the union followed the right avenues to have the CBA negotiated.
It will be noted that in March last year, UASU signed an agreement with the government committing both parties to concluding the 2017-2021 CBA.
The government has ever since failed to implement the CBA forcing the union to issue a strike notice on 21 February this year.
The nationwide strike involving Kenya's 33 public universities lecturers and workers kicked off after a one-week ultimatum given to the government by UASU and KUSU members to negotiate on salary increment collapsed.
