Nobel laureate prize winner, Malala Yousafzai is in Dadaab refugee camp to spend her 19th birthday.
According to ABC news, Malala opted to visit the world’s largest refugee camp on her birthday so as to draw world's attention to the refugee crisis, especially now that Dadaab camp is on the verge of being closed as stated by Kenyan authorities.
The reality that the Dadaab camp will be closed brings yet heightened uncertainties to the refugees, who now face the prospect of getting back to a Somalia, a country that is still entangled with conflicts and fights.
Many of Dadaab’s international refugees have spent most of their lives in the sprawling camps, which have been open for the last two decades, comprising of vast settlements of temporarily established homes and newcomers’ improvised tents of thorn branches.
Malala won the 2014 Nobel Peace token after armed militants shot her in 2012 as she returned home from school in Pakistan. She is also an outspoken advocate for girls’ empowerment through education in a highly conservative culture.
