President Uhuru Kenyatta has called on Kenyans to maintain peace during this electioneering period and even after the August 8 polls.

Speaking on Thursday, during the memorial service of the late Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery at Nairobi Baptist church, Uhuru said irrespective of who wins the upcoming elections, Kenyans should maintain peace and remain united.

“It doesn’t matter who wins the next election, but the future of our people, the prosperity of our nation and the togetherness and unity that comes with all of us calling ourselves citizens of this great nation of Kenya,” Uhuru is quoted by the Star.

He further noted that Kenya can only progress if there is peace in the country and urged Kenyans to ensure the poll is free and fair.

“If we are led by love and passion for Kenya and our desire to make a difference for the betterment of our people and nation, we should never ever contemplate anything but peace.

His sentiments were echoed by his deputy William Ruto who also noted that having a peaceful election in the country will be honouring the wish of the late Major General.

“It was his [Nkaissery’s] wish and passion that we conduct a peaceful election. Dear Kenyans let us give it to him and have a peaceful election,” Ruto said.
