Speaking to the press in Naivasha on Tuesday , Mengere pointed out that many of the street families in the area were often forced to resort to using papers or dirty and old rags.

She challenged the department of health to offer the towels to other sections of the residents and not to concentrate only on school going children.

“Currently we have eight million set aside by the county government and hence this should go towards ensuring that any person who cannot afford them becomes a beneficiary,” she added.

Her views were echoed by Shiko Kihika, a volunteer with the street families who pointed out that there was an urgent need to ensure that they also got contraceptives.

“We have increased cases of rape and sodomy among the women and it is important to ensure that they are well protected,” she added.

She added that many of them were willing to undergo rehabilitation but did not know the means to go about it.

“We are appealing to NACAD A to come up with a proper plan to rehabilitate the youths from glue as the ones which are available are currently not sustainable,” she added
