Non-local workers in Garissa County are fleeing the region due to increased terror attacks by Al-Shabaab militants.
Ijara MP Sophia Abdi Noor said most of the workers in the county have left their duty station for fear of being attacked.
Civil servants and county staff, including teachers and health workers, are mostly non-locals have fled the area, citing danger.
Al-Shabaab militants are targeting non-locals in North Eastern and last month the Mandera County government banned non-locals from using public transport out of Mandera County because the Somalia-based Al-Shabaab fighters and their sympathisers have been targeting buses in the region ferrying non-locals.
Ms Noor said the education sector is the most hit in the region as non-local teachers posted in the region have been seeking transfers to other regions citing insecurity.
She said the teachers leaving the region will hurt the development of education in the constituency.
“My biggest worry is the collapse of social services after the attack. Chances of more teachers leaving, especially non-locals, are high,” said the MP.
Ms Noor urged the government to improve security in Ijara sub county, which was attacked last week by al Shabaab militants.
The Al-Shabaab militants set fire on a police station in Ijara and then escaped with a police Land Cruiser after vandalising a Safaricom mast, cutting off communication.
