The elders were being addressed at Garissa County on Thursday during a meeting that was organised by the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC).

The elders were urged to desist from clan wars and find a way to get people to surrender their illegally possessed arms.

The North Eastern Regional Coordinator Mahamud Saleh warned those communities that engage in clan skirmishes that the government would take their weapons forcefully if a possible solution to the squabbles is not found.

“I have given instructions that all firearms which are with the civilians should be surrendered to the government because we know firearms should only be with the police and the military,” he said.

The elders said that they would try their best to find a way to end the skirmishes and work hand in hand with the government to help maintain peace in the area.
