One police officer died on Wednesday and three others injured when the vehicle they were travelling in was involved in an accident in Garissa County.

Garissa OCPD Aron Moriase who confirmed the incident said the officers had accompanied a group of IEBC officials who were transporting voting materials to Garissa County.

Moriase said the driver lost control of the vehicle before it rolled several times killing one officer on the spot and injuring others.

“The officers were escorting presidential election materials from Garissa Town when the vehicle rolled at Abdisamit,” said OCPD Moriase.

He said the injured officers were taken to Garissa Referral Hospital.

Voting materials were however delivered to many constituencies in North Eastern for today’s presidential election.

According to the Daily Nation, ballot papers in Mandera and Wajir counties had arrived by Wednesday noon and distribution was ongoing in the evening.

In Wajir East, returning officer Abdikadir Sheikh Abdi said all the ballot materials for the constituency were received by evening.

“We are doing the final touches and are convinced the election will take place smoothly. We are ready,” said Abdi.

Mandera County Commissioner Fredrick Shisia said security agencies on the Somali border county were ready for the presidential repeat election.

“Our security systems and arrangements are in place to ensure we have a peaceful and secure polling,” said Shisia.
