The department's head Peter Ambenje said on Tuesday that the counties of Garissa, Mandera, Wajir and Marsabit may experience drought as the other parts of the country receive adequate rainfall beginning March.

Ambeje said the volatile region will also experience high temperatures during the period, firing a warning shot to cattle herders over the hard time that lies ahead.

"As other parts of the country including Nairobi, Nyanza, Western, Cenltral and Rift Valley receive adequate rainfall, North Eastern region will be experiencing drought," Ambenje said in a press statement.

He said government and humanitarian organisations should prepare to intervene just in case the drought prolongs necessitating the distribution of humanitarian aid because of hunger.

North Eastern region is mainly occupied by pastoralists who move from on location to the other in search of pasture and water for their livestock.

The region, from time immemorial has received minimal rainfall because of the effect of the Ethiopian highlands.
