Farmers in the North Rift region have been advised to diversity in their farming activities to ensure they get maximum productivity for their land.
According to Coffee Research Institute Kitale farm station manager Stephen Wabwile, farmers need to embrace Coffee as a cash crop.
Speaking in Eldoret during a meeting with farmers from the Agricultural rich-North Rift counties, Wabwile said coffee farming has proved to be more profitable than any other crop in the country.
"If you plant coffee on one acre piece of land you are guaranteed about one million shillings annually and I don't think a farmer can make such an amount by planting maize or even wheat," noted Wabwile.
"We are not telling our people to stop planting maize. All we want is for them to have coffee as a cash crop and maize as a food crop," he added.
Majority of farmers in the North Rift region depend on maize and wheat as their cash crop despite the many perennial challenges ranging from high cost of production and poor prices they face.
