Leaders from the North Rift counties that lie within the Kerio Valley have called for the disarmament of police reservists deployed in the area. The leaders claim reservists have failed in executing their mandate of curbing cattle rustling that has hit the region.Speaking during a peace meeting in Eldoret town on Monday, the leaders from Elgeyo Marakwet, Baringo and West Pokot counties said some of the more than 2,000 police reservists in the region had resorted to stealing cattle instead of protecting locals' lives and property.Elgeyo Marakwet governor Alex Tolgos who chaired the meeting said, "We have over 2,000 police reservists deployed by the government in the last two years, but their work is not seen. They should be disarmed and those fit to continue with the work should be retrained."The leaders also vowed to put aside their political differences and focus on fighting cattle rustling and insecurity that has hampered development in the region.Statistics indicate that by mid-2017, more than 30,000 people had been displaced by insecurity in region with those displaced staying in camps in Chapin, Kapkomon, Sibilo, Kampi ya Samaki, Moinonin and Chemoe in Baringo North among others.Various agencies including police and KDF have been carrying out operations to flash out bandits in the Kerio Valley that covers Baringo, Elgeyo Marakwet and West Pokot counties for a long time now without success.
