Speaking in Eldoret on Thursday, Abdi assured residents of their security, saying security had been beefed up in the region and intensification of surveillance to avert any impending terror threat.

"I wish to assure members of the public that our police officers are on a very high alert to ensure security in the region," he said.

"We have intensified surveillance to thwart any attempts by the 'al-Shabaab' to sneak into the region to carryout their heinous attacks," he added.

The county commissioner's assertion came several hours after a police officer in Kapenguria opened gunfire on his fellows that left at least seven officers dead including the station's Officer Commanding Station (OCS).
