The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has defended itself over the planned punishment for drink driving.
The authority announced that it will deploy drivers arrested behind the wheel while under the influence of alcohol in morgues,a move that has sparked mixed reactions among Kenyans.
However,s peaking to the press in her office on Thursday, NTSA Director of road safety Njeri Waithaka said that the victims will not be assigned any duties in the human body preservation institutions.
She said that the move is only aimed at teaching them a lesson and demonstrate to them the possible repercussion of their conduct.
''Those who will find themselves in the morgues as a result of being arrested driving while drunk will not be assigned any duties in the facilities, they will just be made to be present to witness the aftermath of their behavior because drunk driving contributes to a percentage of deaths in the nation,'' she said.
She said that it's in the authority's position that such a penalty is likely to be more successful.
''We are of the idea that this step will be more effective than fining or confiscation of their driving licences,'' she added.
NTSA has also acquired 50 new alco-blow apparatus to aid in fight against drunk driving.
