The National Transport Safety Authority  has put into place new regulations that will ensure motorists whose vehicles stall on the road pay more than Sh21,000 in towing charges.

According to NTSA, the move is aimed at reducing road carnage.

The charge will be applied to drivers whose vehicle stall on the road for more than one hour.

These vehicles will be towed to the nearest police station at the owner's charge as according to Njeri Waithaka the NTSA's director of Road Safety.

The heavier the vehicle the more the towing charges and especially for the vehicles weighing more than 60 tonnes and a fee of Sh1,090 will be charged for every extra tone.

" Once the NTSA is informed of a staleed vehicle, towing services will be engaged to remove the vehicle from the road at owner's cost. Towing charges will be as per current Automobile Association of Kenya rates,"Ms Waithaka said.

NTSA director general, Francis Meja on Tuesday said that the directive takes effect immediately to curb further deaths.

"Cautionary measures should also be taken by motorists to alert other road users," said Mr Meja.
