National Safety and Transport Authority has given a stern warning to motorists carrying excess passengers.
Citing the Saturday accident that occurred in Machakos where 10 people lost their lives and scores of others sustained serious injuries, NTSA Chairman Lee Kinyanjui said that the safety agency will take necessary actions to motorists carrying surplus passengers.
"The car that caused the accident at Machakos is a 51 seater bus but it had 12 more passengers. This is a worrying trend since ten lives were caused in that latest event and we will tighten our road safety rules and motorists carrying surplus passengers will be prosecuted," said Kinyanjui.
Last month, a vehicle was impounded along Mombasa road carrying excessive school children and their teachers.
According to Kinyanjui, the Saturday accident was as a result of non-conversant of the driver with the route since he was a new driver in the area ignorant of the road diversions.
"We have also established that the driver was new in the area and less conversant with the area which made him be unable to control the bus after the area became dark. He lost control leading to the accident," added Kinyanjui.
The NTSA agency was formed to end the road accidents and take precautionary measures against motorists and pedestrians that ignore road safety rules.
