Haki Africa has urged President Uhuru Kenyatta to disband the National Transport and Safety Authority for failing to protect Kenyans.
The lobby group says the authority should take responsibility for the deaths of more than 300 Kenyans, who have lost their lives in the last one month.
According to the lobby’s executive director Hussein Khalid, the lobby should shoulder the blame for the many deaths.
“After the accident at Salgaa where over 36 lives were lost, NTSA simply woke up the next morning and foolishly resorted to banning night travel by transport companies,” they said in an open letter to the president.
He added: “While most of these accidents were caused by human error, it is worth noting that NTSA is established primarily to reduce these human errors, what NTSA is engaging in is finger-pointing and blame games yet it is responsible for road safety,”
The authority causes uproar across the country, after banning night traveling for PSVs earlier in the week.
This brought confusion in the transport sector, as it coincided with students reporting back to school.
Other stakeholders in the industry including the Matatu Owners Association have bashed the authority, saying it should be disbanded.
