National Transport Aauthority has proposed new tough rules to help curb road accidents caused by heavy commercial vehicles.
The safety authority now proposes the licensing of heavy commercial vehicles and a mandatory rest time for truck drivers. If approved to become law, the proposals will further ensure that cargo in transit is fully secured.
The proposed safety measures also seek to outlaw parking in undesignated areas along the roads to prevent accidents that might emerge from dangerous parking.
All truck operators will also be required to color their vehicles with retro-reflective contour markings to help other motorists identify the length and width of the vehicle in front of them.
In addition, no truck driver shall be allowed to drive for over eight hours a day or do more than 500 kilometers in a single trip.
The heavy vehicles will also be required to be installed with speed limiters in line with the country's safety standards and which must be approved by the authority.
In a bid to streamline operations, the authority further demands that operators purpose to prepare a daily log to account for all driver's on-duty and off-duty periods.
The proposals were presented on Monday to the House committee on transport by the NTSA Chair Lee Kinyanjui and Director General Mr Francis Meja.
