The CS for transport and infrastructure, James Macharia on Monday flagged off 45 vehicles and 5 ambulances which are commissioned to help to curb road insecurity.
The flagging off exercise, which took place at Uhuru Park in Nairobi, also gave Macharia room to announce that new rules will be introduced to curb road accidents. Macharia said that the rules would be tougher than the existing ones.
‘‘We are going to review the existing rules because some are too favourable to matatu operators. Motorcyclists also take advantage of them which is very bad. The reviewed rules will be tougher than those in existence,’’ said Macharia.
This comes after the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) said that most of the road accidents are caused by drunk driving. The cabinet secretary, however, congratulated the management team at the NTSA for properly using the resources they had to purchase the vehicles. He said this shows the body is working hard to curb road accidents.
Florence Muita, an attendee said she was impressed to see the green cars and 5 ambulances. She also said she is sure roads will be safe after the release of the vehicles because NTSA will work hard to curb the increasing cases of road accidents.
