Regulator, National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has denied playing part in the Tuesday’s horrific Sachangwan accident that has claimed an estimated 32 lives.
Earlier reports carried by the media on account of eyewitnesses suggested that NTSA’s officers were pursuing the 18-wheeler truck that caused the multiple car crash.
NTSA Director General Francis Meja said his officers were simply trying to warn other motorists of the runaway truck along the Nakuru-Eldoret highway.
“Because they (eyewitnesses) saw a vehicle following the truck, could have been under an illusion that they were in pursuit. No, this is not true,” he said.
DG Meja asked members of the public to verify information instead of relying on speculation.
“We want to ask the public not to speculate. It’s horrible to crucify officers diligently doing their job without verifying information,” Meja said.
Mejja further stated that the NTSA officers and their vehicle were at least 500 meters away from the lorry at the time of the accident.
The driver of the killer truck lost control and rammed into oncoming vehicles including a Modern Coast bus, four public service vehicles, a truck and several saloon cars.
At least 32 persons have lost their lives after being involved in the accident.
