The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) is drafting rules and regulations that will see Toyota Probox, Noah and other vehicles allowed to operate in the public service sector (PSVs).

Currently the vehicles are operating illegally in the sector as they are not licensed to carry passengers for public transport.

According to NTSA Board Member Job Chirchir, owners of Probox and Noah vehicles will be required to register them and get PSV licence before they are allowed to operate in the public transport sector.

Speaking in Eldoret on Wednesday during a meeting with stakeholders in the Matatu sector from the North Rift region, Chirchir said Probox cars had caused unfair competition in the sector.

"This vehicles have been a menace in this public transport sector but as an Authority we are seriously thinking about putting them under a regime of licencing and regulations so that they have a specific number of passengers, be given stages and also pay taxes like other matatus," said Mr. Chirchir.

"It has been unfair competition that matatus pay taxes and other levies but not those probox and the Noah's but now we want to put them under our control," he added.

The plan, according to the NTSA board member will be actualized before the end of this year.
