Drivers plying major highways across the country will have a chance to get free medical checkups while undertaking their daily tasks, thanks to an initiative launched by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).

According to NTSA director general Francis Meja, the safety agency will be able to check drivers' health status for diabetes, high blood pressure, weight and also eyesight at their medical camps.

For drivers heading to Northern Kenya, the NTSA camps will be put up along the Garissa highway where the services shall be offered free of charge. Meja, further added that the exercise will majorly target drivers of public service vehicles, heavy commercial vehicles and also private cars.

The exercise is expected to continue till late December, as the authority conducts its routine crack down on un-roadworthy vehicles and reckless drivers during the festive season. The agency has also launched a mobile application which will assist in real time road and safety measures.
