This was disclosed by the NTSA deputy director in charge of road safety Duncan Kibongong.

Kibongong said road carnage is among the leading causes of deaths worldwide.

He said in 2017, 3,500 people died in road accidents in Kenya.

Kibongong spoke at a stakeholders meeting in Wote, Makueni County today.

He said Makueni County is rated number five in the country in terms of fatalities out of road accidents.

"In every year around the globe, around 1.24 million people lose their lives through traffic crashes with majority of the people involved in accidents aged between 15-29 years," Kibongong said.

Kibongong said the National Safety and Transport Authority targets twenty leading counties in fatalities through formation of committees to work on changing the behavior of road users and children as they grow.

He said daily global fatalities will double from 3,500 to 7,000 people by 2030 if no successful interventions are made.

The meeting brought together security personnel from Makueni County, Makueni Governor Kivutha Kibwana and other stakeholders from NTSA who jointly agreed to form a committee that will comprise matatu owners, vehicle and motorcycle sellers to pave way towards reducing road deaths.

Kibwana said many accidents are out of human error especially rogue drivers who flout traffic laws.

“We are number 5 countrywide in terms of fatalities,148 people died in Makueni last year. Majority being pedestrians and motorcyclists, the major problem which needs to be addressed since God doesn’t want us to die out of careless accidents," Kibwana said.

He disclosed that the Makueni County Government has been straining in terms of health resources due to road accidents.

“Though we have free health care to our people, accidents is a source of loss to the county government. We will sensitize our people through this committee since we want to get Makueni out of number 5 to 47 in accidents,”he added.
