Nubian community in Kibra have a reason to smile, after president Uhuru Kenyatta issued them with a title deed for 288 acres of land.
In a ceremony held on Friday, the leaders representing the Nubian community shed tears of Joy as they received the certificate.
The certificate was in the name 'Nubian Community Trust'.
According to the leaders, the Nubian community has been pleading with successive governments to issue them with titles to no avail.
The president promised to work with other leaders to ensure the area is improved in terms of infrastructure and social amenities.
“Kibra should not be a tourist venue for people to see desperation and poverty,” he said.
“You have lived in Kibra for many years, without knowing whether you would continue living in your home, but that problem is now over,” he added.
Lands CS Jacob Kaimenyi said he expects his ministry will issue more than 200,000 within the next two months.
This is not the first time President Kenyatta’s government has issued such certificates to displaced individuals, having done the same in different areas including Kilifi, Lamu and Uasin Gishu.
The titles were however contested, and the goverment put to task to explain the legitimacy of the same documents.
For now, however, the Nubian Community will be feeling safe, having received the title from the head of state.
