[Photo|Daily Nation]More girls compared to boys will sit for this year's Kenya Certificate of Primary Education exams that starts on Tuesday.Over 1 million candidates will be sitting for the exams.A total of 11,163 girls have been entered for the exams compared to 10,674 boys. Girls are more than boys in Teso North, Nambale, Samia, Matayos, Teso South and Bunyala with only Butula registering more boys than girls.Busia County Chief Officer for Education and Vocational Training Joel Barua said the fact that more girls have been enrolled in this year's exams confirms that affirmative action issue seems to be producing results.Barua said he expects about 30 per cent of the candidates who will fail to gain admission into secondary schools to join the 18 youth polytechnics in the county which have robust programs currently.He wished candidates best of luck and hoped that the charged political atmosphere in the country will not affect the performance of the candidates. "I also don't expect cheating which usually don't produce the best graduates," he said.At Lukonyi Boys Primary School in Matayos Sub-county the candidates expressed confidence of excelling in the exams that starts on Tuesday.Top two candidates Edson Wanyama and Dan Riziki expressed optimism of doing well in the exams to enable them pursue medicine as their future careers.School head John Jakoya said 152 candidates will sit for this year's exams, adding that they are hoping to achieve an mean score of 310, up from 293 they recorded in 2016.
