The Chairman of Nacada John Mututho, has said that more than 50 percent of students in all learning institutions in Kenya have already been exposed into drugs and also alcohol abuse in Kenya.
“50 percent of the students in learning institutions are already doing drugs and alcohol, and what is amaze us is the fact that 17 percent of the parents are aware that their children are indulging themselves in alcohol and drugs and they are doing nothing about it,” said Mututho.
Mututho said that the recent research that was carried out by Nacada shows that the use of alcohol and drugs is increasing at a very alarming rate, affecting grades of the students.
“It is as if nothing is being done since the number of young children engaging themselves in alcohol has greatly increased. From our research, we have also associated poor performances in schools with the use of drugs,” he added.
Mututho, who was speaking in Nakuru town on Sunday said that most students engages themselves in alcohol and drug abuse during school's activities such as games and drama festivals.
“I want to call upon the head teachers and mistress to ensure that they take stern actions against students who are caught drunk during the games and dramas activities. We want to ensure that we curb this behaviour since quite a big number of our youths are abusing dungs and also alcohol,” added the chair.
