Police in Kirinyaga County have arrested a nurse at Kimbimbi Hospital for allegedly helping a mother dump her newborn baby in a pit latrine.
According to the hospital administrator Nancy Kuria, the baby who had been trapped inside the latrine for four hours was discovered by a watchman.
She said the baby, weighing around 2.5Kgs, was rescued alive with the placenta still in place but his skin had been injured by maggots.
The baby boy was discovered after some patients complained of persistent cries of a baby from the latrines.
She however said there are no records of the delivery at the hospital raising suspicion that one of the nurses at the hospital had a hand in the dumping of the baby.
Kuria added that the hospital is well secured and so it was unlikely that the baby was dumped by someone from outside.
The newborn was transferred to Kerugoya County Referral Hospital for intensive care and treatment.
Mwea East OCPD, Kizito Mutoro said police have launched investigations into the matter to determine the identity of the baby’s mother and whether or not the nurse was involved.
