Master Wilfred Onkoba met his death when he was playing with fellow children across an open dam reserved for Magura tea estate.

According to witnesses, the nursery kid at Magura primary was having fun with three other children on their way from school before making movements near the dam and subsequently drowning.

“I heard cries from the other children he was playing with and by the moment I arrived here, it was too late since he was deep inside the dam. I called my friends who helped me to retrieve the body,” said Justine Mokua, a resident in the area.

“I think the situation was a bit hard for the young boys who were around since they were unable to swim and rescue their friend and that is why they made distress calls.”

He said the crew managed to retrieve the body of the deceased shortly after they had arrived since the dam was not very deep.

“We were able to retrieve the body few minutes afterwards. I think we could have managed to save the young boy if we were notified earlier,” said Mokua.

Area assistant chief Milton Mouko confirmed the incident and urged parents to pick their young ones from schools after sessions.

“Some deaths can be avoided like this one. If parents take responsibility by picking their young ones from schools after classes, we will be able to deal with related incidents,” he said.
