Nurses have given both the county and national governments a three-week ultimatum to address their issues lest they go on a nationwide strike.
If the demands are not met, the nurses have planned to go on strike from August this year.
The nurses want the governments to initiate negotiations on the return of nurses salaries and other emoluments back to the national government, negotiate and sign the harmonised Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) and recognition agreement and the designation and promotion of health workers in all the counties as effected.
Speaking in a press briefing in Eldoret on Monday, John Bii, the Kenya National Union of Nurses (KNUN) chairman said that the county governments have failed in the management of health services in the counties.
“The county government has no technical know-how to manage the resources they have. Our salaries come late in the month,” said Bii.
The chair added that there was a shortage of medicine in the health centres owing to embezzlement of funds by the administrations of the health centres.
He urged citizens not to stay silent on issues of drugs in the health centres.
“We as a union have been highlighting drug theft in the health centres in the entire country and now want the government to take action,” added Bii.
