The ongoing talks by a section of Gusii leaders on plans to unite the Gusii community have suffered a blow after three high-profile leaders from Nyamira County termed the calls as ‘egocentric’ and ‘unwelcome’.

Kisii Senator Chris Obure has been pushing for the region to unite under one party and last month, he, and other Kisii County leaders convened a meeting dubbed Otamba declaration which backfired.

Speaking at a fundraiser at Kemera on Saturday, Kitutu Masaba MP and ODM national treasurer Timothy Bosire warned the leaders against engaging in fiction over the unity of the community.

“The Gusii community has never been disunited all this time and it’s wrong for some few egocentric people to hold round-table meetings purporting to be pushing for the its unity. We are united than ever and engaging in fiction is unacceptable,” he said.

Nyamira Governor John Nyagarama added: “the new Constitution gives all Kenyans the ability to be served equally and without prejudice. It’s wrong to think that if you rally people to support a certain coalition is when development will be achieved. Our community doesn’t need to be united because we have never had divisions”.

Similar sentiments have been echoed by Nyamira woman representative Alice Chae who accused some leaders of soliciting money from State House at the expense of poor people.

“These leaders running to State House do not have any agenda for the people. They are only pushing for their selfish interests,” she said when she addressed Borabu residents.
