Kisii Governor James Ongwae and his Nyamira counterpart John Nyagarama will meet on Tuesday to discuss controversy surrounding ownership of border town of Keroka, Nyamira Senator Okong’o Mong’are has confirmed.
A meeting chaired by the two governors was abandoned prematurely early this month, a reason that has propelled Senator Mong’are and his Kisii counterpart Chris Obure to summon the two county bosses to seek the way forward.
The two counties have been engaged in a tussle over the control of the town which has often culminated to ugly scenes in form of violence.
“Senator Obure and I have summoned the two governors on Tuesday and hopefully they will honour the summons so that we try to iron out this crisis once and for all,” Mong’are said in a whatsap post on Monday.
“We want to put the matter to a rest because it can be solved. There is no need for us to tussle over the town yet everyone knows his territory,” Okong’o added.
He said they will review a memorandum which was signed mid-2015 and make inferences that will help to bring the crisis into a halt.
“We had signed a memorandum over the ownership of the town and as area Senators, we want to engage the two governors to see whether it’s adhered to as we agreed,” he said.
“After we make our own observations, we will try to come out with outstanding issues that will help better the MoU for the sake of peace,” he said.
The MoU indicated that Nyamira County would be in charge of revenue collection but it had to involve their Kisii counterparts on matters development but it has since been mutilated by both sides.
