Nyamira Governor John Nyagarama is planning a lunch programme for county primary school pupils beginning next year.
He said the programme will save pupils a lot of time which can be utilised in studies thereby improving the education standards in the county.
Nyagarama noted that a majority of children walk long distances from school to their homes during lunch breaks, a move he said affects their concentration in the afternoon since they are exhausted.
He added that the programme is aimed at keeping children in school noting that some families are unable to provide for lunch meals for their children.
"My government will from next year (2017) start school lunch programme for all pupils in the county. This is aimed at keeping our children in school and saving the time that they spend going to their homes, this will improve our education standards in the county and the region", he said.
"This will also reduce the dropout rate as more children will be attracted and retained in schools," added Nyagarama.
The county boss spoke Wednesday at Magombo market, Kitutu Masaba constituency where he officially opened the market constructed by his government to the tune of Sh10.4 million.
