Senator Okong’o Mong’are of Nyamira and his Kisii counterpart Chris Obure were forced to reschedule a peace meeting over Keroka town dispute after Nyamira Governor John Nyagarama failed to turn up on Tuesday.
The two senators had summoned Governor James Ongwae and Nyagarama to review a memorandum of understanding that was signed in 2015, which has reportedly been mutilated leading to skirmishes in the town.
On Tuesday, Okong’o said the meeting will be held on May 9, 2016 and will see officials from National Lands Commission and Ministry of Interior and Coordination attending.
“We were to have the peace meeting but it could not kick off since Nyagarama has not turned up. We could not proceed without him because the two governors ought to be around,” Mong’are said.
“As the co-chair of the meeting, I have postponed it to May 9, and we are hopeful the officials from NLC and Ministry of Interior will attend even after they were frustrated today,” he added.
However, when contacted, Nyamira County Secretary Erick Onchana said Nyagarama was in Nairobi to finalise President Uhuru Kenyatta’s visit to the region on Wednesday.
“We are all aware that the governor was out of county to finalise the president’s visit to the county which is due today (Wednesday). He intended to be in the peace mission but due to circumstances, he couldn’t make it. It’s important that it has been postponed,” he said.
