Schools administrations in Nyamira County have been challenged to embrace disaster preparedness to ensure security of their learners in case of fire break outs.
Nyamira Governor, John Nyagarama has raised concern that some boarding secondary schools in the County were poorly papered for any disaster, especially fire break outs.
Speaking at Rigoma Mixed Secondary school, Rigoma ward in the County after visiting the School to access the damage done after one of its dormitories was gutted by fire, the Governor directed that all contractors undertaking construction of school dormitory and tuition block projects should give priority to emergence exits as part of security measure for students and the general community within the institutions.
"In modern architectural designs involving buildings for schools and other public institutions, the designers of such projects must cater for emergence exits to assure the occupants of the facilities of their security and safety in case of any disaster," stated Nyagarama.
Responding to the school Principal, Jane Samba's appeal that the school dormitory which was gutted by fire be re-designed to provide for the missing emergence exits, Nyagarama promised that the County Government will look into the matter to ensure students are secure from any threats of their safety.
